Installing a Level 2 charger at home is key to securing a cost-effective, convenient, and efficient charge capability for your new EV.

Level 2 chargers come in two connection forms - a NEMA plug (an electrical plug standard that comes in different sizes and styles), or hardwire.

Plug Charger Installation

If your Level 2 home charger has a plug, this plug will be attached to a cable ranging in length from about 10 to 25 feet and needs to be plugged into the correct outlet type. A qualified electrician can install an outlet of the correct type connected to your electricity supply so that it delivers the required 240V.

Usually, these outlets are one of the ones shown below, for a 240V/Level 2 charger. Other chargers may require a different outlet type - this will be part of your charger’s specifications.

If your home already has an existing NEMA socket (a socket standard) that supports 240V, you can buy a charger using that same NEMA plug type. If not, you may be able to buy an adapter cable to connect other kinds of NEMA charger sockets.

Hardwire Charger Installation

A hardwired Level 2 charger has no plug connecting to an outlet in your home. It is instead directly wired into your home’s existing electrical wiring, or into an electrical junction box. You will need an electrician to perform this installation.
